Who is responsible

Where Stay Guide is operated by an individual publisher rather than a registered company, and can be reached at [email protected]. We say so plainly because a privacy notice that names no one is worth less than one that admits what it cannot yet name. If that changes, this page changes with it.

What we collect directly

Nothing. There is no account, no newsletter, no comment form and no login. You can read every page on this site without giving us anything, and without us storing anything in your browser.

If you email us, we hold that email in order to answer it. We do not add the address to any list.

What is collected if you allow analytics

If you accept analytics, Google Analytics 4 runs and records that a page was viewed, roughly where in the world from, which page sent you and what device you used. It sets cookies and Google receives your IP address, which we ask it to truncate.

The legal basis is your consent, and only your consent. Refuse and none of it loads: no script, no cookie, no request. You can change your mind at any time through the cookie settings link in the footer.

What happens when you follow a booking link

Links to accommodation are affiliate links. Following one takes you to Booking.com, in most cases through Commission Junction, the network that measures whether a booking came from us. From that point you are on their site under their terms and their privacy policy, and they may set their own cookies.

We are told that a booking happened and what commission it earned. We are not told who you are, and we never receive your name, your dates or your payment details.

Who else sees anything

Three parties, and only if the circumstances above apply:

• Google, for analytics, if you allowed it. Google may transfer data outside the EU under its standard contractual clauses.
• Commission Junction and Booking.com, if you follow a booking link, and only from the moment you follow it.
• Cloudflare and our host, which see the ordinary server request every website receives, and keep it briefly to serve the page and block abuse.

How long anything is kept

Analytics data is retained by Google for fourteen months and then deleted. Your consent decision stays in your own browser until you clear it or change it — it is not on our servers. Emails are kept as long as the conversation is useful and then deleted.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you may ask for a copy of anything we hold about you, ask for it corrected or deleted, object to it being processed, or withdraw a consent you have given. Write to [email protected] and we will answer within a month. If the answer does not satisfy you, you may complain to the data protection authority where you live.

In practice the honest answer to most such requests will be that we hold nothing: the site is built so that there is very little to ask about.

Children

This site is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.
