Step one · choose the area
The walled old city, where riads hide behind blank walls on lanes too narrow for a car, and the souks run north from the main square. Almost everything a first visit comes for is inside these walls and reached on foot.

A first visit · Atmosphere
The southern medina, holding the Saadian Tombs, the Badi and Bahia palaces and the old Jewish quarter. The same walled city as the centre, with fewer people in the lanes.

Sightseeing with fewer crowds · Palaces
The new town the French laid out west of the walls: wide streets, conventional hotels, galleries and restaurants, and taxis that can reach your door. It is a different city from the medina and a ten-minute drive from it.

Arriving by car · A conventional hotel
The palm groves north-east of the city, where the resort hotels have room for gardens and pools. It is quiet and green, and it is a taxi ride from every meal that is not in your hotel.
